The bolt pattern for Mustang has been a major concern for many beginner Mustang drivers, which is to be expected considering Ford’s diverse car lines and specs.

A more detailed guide will be further revealed in my article. Keep scrolling for more information.

What Is The Ford Mustang Bolt Pattern?

All models from 1994 onwards have a 5×114.3 mm (5×4.5 inches) pattern, meaning there are 5 lugs on an imaginary circle 114.3 mm in diameter. However, every Ford Ranger car before 1994 had a 4-lug pattern: 4 x 108 (1974 to 1993) and 4 x 114.3 (1973 and backward).

How to Find Out Your Ford Mustang Pattern Without Manuals?

Count how many lug bolts the wheel has (it should be 4 or 5 since these are Ford Mustangs we are talking about). Then measure the gap between the bolts to determine the pattern’s diameter.

  • For 4-lug (even number): Measure the gap between one nut’s actual center and another nut’s center; the two nuts are across from each other directly.
  • For 5-lug (odd number): Measure the gap between one nut’s center to a point between two other nuts adjacent to it.

Where to buy Ford Mustang Wheels That Fit Their Designated Bolt Patterns

Since the Ford Mustang is a popular car model, you can buy its wheels at popular online retailers, specialty wheel stores, and local automotive parts shops. In the rare case that you cannot find anything from these sources, check out Ford dealerships.

Online Retailers

Webpages like eBay, Amazon, Tire Rack, or AmericanMuscle offer numerous Mustang wheels (both factory- and aftermarket-produced) in diverse sizes and styles. Check the ratings and customer feedback before deciding on any option.

Specialty Wheel Chains

Look for shops that focus solely on tires and wheels; not only are their selections super diverse, but the staff can also offer honest, expert advice regarding the wheel’s style and fitment.

Local Automotive Part Stores

Check your neighborhood’s auto stores to see whether any wheels are suited to the Mustang’s wheel hub. Some exemplary names are O’Reilly, AutoZone, Discount Tires, etc.

Ford Dealerships

If all else fails, your best bet is to drop by any dealership approved by Ford itself. You can find tons of Mustang-compatible wheels here – and not to mention parts for models in other Ford lines.

Since these dealerships are not always around the neighborhood, search for the closest one via Google Maps and dial the staff beforehand.

How to Change Ford Mustang’s Four-Bolt to Five-Bolt Wheel Pattern?

Prepare a wheel adapter. Move the car onto a jack stand to remove all the wheels and bolts. Install the adapter’s extra bolt and studs, and tighten them to the exact torque spec (133 Nm, 135 Nm, or 204 Nm, depending on the model year).

Step 1. Prepare The Adapter

Find an appropriate, high-quality adapter on the market. Drivers’ demands for changing 4-lug into 5-lug are pretty high, so you should easily spot a good adapter in a blink.

Step 2. Loosen and Eventually Remove The Wheel Lug Nuts

Loosen the wheel lugs (do not remove them completely yet). Then use a jack to lift your car above the ground and gradually lower it on a stand. Now, pull off all the lug nuts and set them aside.

Step 3. Install An Extra Bolt

Place the adapter onto the wheel’s hub. Once done, install the bolts that are enclosed with your adapter.

Step 4. Add Finishing Touches

Place the wheel onto the adapter’s studs; install and tighten the nuts to the required torque spec using torque wrenches(check the above section for the precise torque).

Now lower your car from the stand to the ground using a jack. And that concludes the process of updating your 4-lug Ford Mustang pattern.

Conclusion

Ford Mustang models have both 4-lug and 5-lug patterns; the best way to learn which one yours has without manuals is to count the number of bolts per wheel.

And feel free to update the 4-lug design to 5-lug if you want; just make sure the adapter is suitable and high-quality.
